STAGE 2 DISINFECTANTS AND DISINFECTANTS BYPRODUCTS RULE COMPLIANCE

Who is included, and what is required?
The Stage II Disinfectants and Disinfectants Byproducts Rule is for all community water systems and non-community water systems that disinfect their water. The rule builds upon the existing Stage I Rule that is currently in effect. It goes beyond the current requirement of finding the locations with the highest residence times in the system. They require that you use specific criteria to locate the sites where the highest TTHM and HAA5 will most likely occur. You will be searching for the worst locations possible in your system. There are confusing criteria for determining site locations and understanding the sample deadlines. A missed deadline may require submitting and accepting a provisional schedule. The rule is the result of legal action based upon science, contains management necessities, and is a political compromise.

When does the rule start?
The final version of the rule was promulgated on January 4, 2006 with various deadlines starting as soon as October 1, 2006. Deadlines are not determined just by the size of your system. If you purchase water, your deadline may be determined based upon the utility you buy water from.
